What Could be the Cause of your Symptoms?

There could be many different or overlapping factors causing problematic digestive symptoms which is why it is important not to guess what they are but properly investigate and test. Here are some common causes of ongoing problematic digestive symptoms like pain, constipation, diarrhoea, bloating and gas:

  • Dietary Choices – Processed foods, refined sugars, unhealthy fats, excess alcohol or unbalanced ratios of macro nutrients (carbohydrate, protein and fat).

  • Food Sensitivities or Intolerances – Intolerance to lactose, gluten, histamine or specific foods.

  • Parasites or lingering effects of food poisoning can cause imbalances in gut bacteria or even long-term intestinal damage

  • Gut microbiome imbalance – different species of gut bacteria, fungi and microbes making up the microbiome can be overgrown or deficient which means that the gut’s major role in protecting us from pathogens, absorbing nutrients, regulating immunity, brain health and hormonal balance can be compromised. The health and structure of the gut itself can become damaged.

  • Hormone imbalances - Hormones regulate the appetite, the feeling full sensation, the movement of food through the gut and the stimulation of digestive secretions.  Oestrogen and progesterone can influence the microbiome balance

  • Stress and Lifestyle – Chronic stress, lack of physical activity, exposure to environmental toxins, and disruption in the gut/brain connection can negatively impact digestion

  • Medical conditions such as Crohn’s disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), ulcerative colitis, Coeliac disease, gynaecological issues and gallstones are common culprits of unpleasant symptoms, requiring often widely different approaches

  • Medications – Excessive or prolonged use of certain medications like pain killers or antibiotics, can irritate the digestive tract or disrupt the microbiome.

  • Hydration and fibre – insufficient water intake and low or unvaried dietary fibre can lead to constipation and other digestive issues. However, increasing fibre in a compromised gut can also cause bloating and gas and needs careful management.

  • Low stomach acid or digestive enzymes – these are essential for digestion and when levels are too low, digestion is compromised leading to bloating and possible food intolerances

My Story: How I found relief (and how you can too)

I know how frustrating and frightening it can be to feel bloated and experience severe abdominal pain which comes and goes unexpectedly with no apparent cause. Sometimes I would simply grip onto my kitchen work surface for support and wait for the wave a sharp pain in my gut to subside. I was referred to a specialist consultant and tests were done which ruled out bowel disease, but then I was left with antispasmodic medication and no further advice.

I spent a long time looking for a solution. Experimenting with excluding foods, trying supplements, learning to relax with yoga and meditation and eventually completing a Masters in Personalised Nutrition.

Now I am symptom free and in even better health because I learnt how to:
